Statistical science students win national Quality & Productivity Award
Yalan Hu and Long (Michael) Luo, SMU doctoral candidates in the Department of Statistical Science, and teammate He Yang of Mississippi State University, have taken top honors in the Quality & Productivity Student Competition sponsored by the American Statistical Association.
DALLAS (SMU) —Yalan Hu and Long (Michael) Luo, SMU doctoral candidates in the Department of Statistical Science, and teammate He Yang of Mississippi State University, have taken top honors in the Quality & Productivity Student Competition sponsored by the American Statistical Association.

The award was bestowed on the group after it offered a solution for greatly improving the Watfactory, a virtual manufacturing process designed to teach statistical methods for process improvement with the limitation of a tight budget. The contest was open to student teams worldwide.
The students will present how they arrived at their solution at a session in Miami Beach this August. The students will share a $500 prize and each receive a $1,000 travel stipend.
“Using the knowledge of different fields of statistical science, such as sampling techniques, experimental designs and regression analysis, our team walked through the journey of process improvement and found a feasible and cost-effective solution to reducing variation in the final output,” says SMU Statistical Science Associate Professor Tony Ng, the group’s faculty mentor.
