Islamic art and culture forum set for April 21 at SMU

Dallas (SMU) — Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University will host a forum on Islamic art and culture at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, featuring Hussein Rashid, visiting Professor at Virginia Theological Seminary.

“Everyday Art: Islamic Contribution to American Arts” is a richly illustrated talk by Dr. Rashid, exploring the Islamic impact on American popular culture using examples from multiple communities and time periods throughout American history. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Great Hall of Perkins School of Theology on the SMU campus.

Dr. Rashid is a passionate instructor at one of the largest interfaith centers in Manhattan, housed at the Park Avenue Christian Church. He also is an associate editor at Religion Dispatches, and has appeared on CBS Evening News, CNN, Russia Today, Channel 4 (UK), and State of Belief—Air America Radio. In addition to his presentation at Perkins School of Theology, Dr. Rashid will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday at The University of Texas at Arlington.
