Juliette McCulloughDALLAS (SMU) – The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University has announced that Juliette McCullough is the recipient of the 2008 Moss/Chumley Artist Award.  The award is given annually to an outstanding North Texas artist who has exhibited professionally for at least 10 years and who has a proven track record as an active community advocate for the visual arts.

Juliette McCullough was selected for her body of work in painting. She studied at Camberwell School of Art and Craft, the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, and The Royal Academy of Arts, all in London, receiving the British equivalent of an M.F.A. She also studied in Munich. She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Dallas, and the United Kingdom, and participated in group shows in England, Italy and Japan as well as North Texas.

A native of England, McCullough moved to Dallas in 1987 and has been actively working and participating in the Dallas arts community for more than 20 years. She has taught art at The Hockaday School since 1993, and has also taught at Richland and Collin County community colleges. She has also given teacher and adult workshops at the Dallas Museum of Art, the Plano I.S.D. and other locales.

“Artistically speaking, changing cultures can be like leaving your pedigree, your history behind you, and having to reinvent yourself all over again,” she said. “Teaching art has certainly given me the opportunity to reach out and become part of a community, but my life as a painter of necessity is a life of isolation, spending many, many hours alone in the studio struggling to pull out meaning through imagery which lives on a level deeper than words. To be chosen for this award is a wonderful affirmation for me as an artist, an acceptance on a level that no success in the commercial art world can ever match, and I am deeply grateful for it.”

The jury included Greg Warden, SMU Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and University Distinguished Professor of Art History; Kevin Vogel of Valley House Gallery in Dallas; and Elizabeth Hunt-Blanc, Deputy Director of the Meadows Museum.

Frank Moss and Jim Chumley were Dallas art dealers who made outstanding contributions to the visual arts in North Texas during the 1980s. The pair operated the Nimbus Gallery on Routh Street from 1980 to 1987 and the Moss/Chumley Gallery at the Crescent from 1986 to 1989, where they showcased numerous new artists. The Moss/Chumley Memorial Fund was begun in 1989 by Frank Moss and the Meadows Museum as a tribute to Jim Chumley; Moss’s name was added to the memorial fund upon his death in 1991. Established in 1995, the Moss/Chumley Award is given in their memory. The award is open to artists working in any medium who reside in one of the 11 North Texas counties: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise. Past recipients have included Catherine Chauvin, Kaleta Doolin, David Dreyer, Susan Kae Grant, David Hickman, Tracy Hicks, David McCullough (no relation), Bob Nunn, Sherry Owens, Ludwig Schwarz, Noah Simblist, Janet Tyson, Marie Van Arsdale, Mary Vernon and Marilyn Waligore.
