Art student Amy Revier receives prestigious Fulbright Fellowship
Amy Revier, an art student from Austin, has received a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Fellowship to study in Iceland.
DALLAS (SMU) – Amy Revier, a senior art major in SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, has received a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student fellowship to study in Iceland and work in the studio of internationally recognized sculptor and textile artist Hildur Bjarnadóttir in Reykjavik from September 2009 through August 2010.

The significant role that textiles and text play in Revier’s art is one of the reasons she was drawn to working with Bjarnadóttir, who uses textile and text to make conceptually engaging sculpture and installations. “I was fortunate to meet Hildur when she was a visiting artist at SMU,” said Revier. “I spent a week with her on campus, installing her work and discussing Iceland’s culture and history of textiles. Shortly after her visit I contacted her and proposed becoming a studio assistant.”
Revier has also done extensive research and traveling in Latin America, where she learned ancient Peruvian weaving methods such as working on a back strap loom; she looks forward to gaining a different perspective on textiles in Iceland. The work she plans to make in Iceland will “likely be organized into several series,” she said. “I hope to create a collection of small pieces, made daily, that speak of something large – I will be working on sculptural garments and performance pieces where I participate with the community.”

Revier, an Austin native, will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Art from SMU in May. At SMU, she was a Hunt Leadership Scholar and president of the Student Art Association. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Texas. Her next show, at the MAC (McKinney Avenue Contemporary) in Dallas, opens May 9, 2009, and focuses on her hibernation suits and performance work.
Revier is one of 1,450 U.S. citizens selected to study abroad this year through the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright U.S. Student Program, and one of more than 40 SMU students who have been awarded the fellowship in the last 35 years.
