Mercedes-Benz Financial Services USA LLC (MBFS) announced on May 14 the first two winners of its annual scholarship program to benefit students in the art departments of SMU in Dallas and TCU in Fort Worth.

The company said a year ago that it was expanding its partnership with the art departments of SMU and TCU, creating an annual scholarship program awarding $5,000 annually to an art student at each university.

The purpose of the scholarships is to recognize the top talent of emerging artists in North Texas and to further recognize the students who are exhibiting their work in the Mercedes-Benz Financial Services facility. Students, faculty and alumni from both universities began exhibiting their work in 2008 upon completion of the 164,000 square-foot facility in the Alliance, Texas commercial development along Interstate I-35W.

The winner from SMU is junior Diana Antohe, a Presidential Scholar majoring in art at the Meadows School of the Arts. Bradly Brown is the winner at TCU. The artists, their friends, family and MBFS employees gathered last night at an annual event at the facility celebrating the company’s relationship with the two universities.

“These types of awards have a great impact for artists at this early stage of their careers,” said Michael Corris, chair of the Meadows School of the Arts. “I believe I speak for all of my colleagues in the Division of Art when I say we consider this year’s $5,000 scholarship award a milestone in the history of Mercedes-Benz’s support for art in North Texas.”

Contemporary art created by the students, faculty and alumni of the SMU and TCU art departments is on display in the office space on a 12-month rotating basis. The installation, called “Experiencing Perspectives” creates a gallery environment for the 625 employees of this international automotive financial services company.
