Meadows Student and Veteran Santiago Martinez Leads Donation Effort in Honor of Veterans Day
Former Marine, now a communication studies major, also featured in national campaign for the Hispanic College Fund
Santiago Martinez, who served in the Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008 and is now a communication studies major in the Meadows School, is one of some 175 SMU students who are current or former military members. Martinez is co-founder of the new student organization U.S. Military Veterans of SMU, and in honor of Veterans Day the group will be collecting donations for holiday care packages for military members overseas.
Items will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 11 at Hughes-Trigg Commons and on Saturday, November 12 on the Boulevard near McFarlin Auditorium, where the student veterans will host a tent before the SMU-Navy game at 2:30 p.m.
In addition, Martinez’s inspiring personal story of how the Marines helped him focus on educational goals is part of the Hispanic College Fund’s national campaign.
