Voice Alum Juan José de León (M.M. ’10) Wins Metropolitan Opera Regional Audition

Tenor will make Dallas Opera debut in February

Meadows graduate Juan José de León (M.M. 2010 - Voice) was named the winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council’s Southwest Regional Auditions on January 23. He competed against 42 other singers from around the Southwest in front of a packed audience at Trinity University in San Antonio. De León won the regional contest with his performance of “Ah mes amis, quel jour de fete” from Donizetti’s La fille du regiment, famous for its series of nine high-C’s in a row, and Mozart’s haunting aria Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön from The Magic Flute. De León will now advance to the national semifinals in New York City in March to compete against 14 to 20 other singers on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. From there, 10 finalists will be chosen to compete in a public concert, the Grand Finals Concert, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; the concert will be broadcast nationwide on the Metropolitan Opera Radio Network. The jury will award approximately five Grand Winner awards of $15,000 each; the remaining finalists receive $5,000 each, and those singers who were national semifinalists but did not advance to the national finals will be given $1,500 to further their studies.

De León, who grew up in Corpus Christi, studied at the Meadows School with Professor of Voice Virginia Dupuy. While at SMU, he was one of three featured performers in the Dallas Opera/SMU Emerging Artists Program, presenting “Opera in a Box: Follow Your Dreams” to schools throughout DFW. This past summer, he was chosen one of 38 singers from more than 600 applicants to participate in Glimmerglass Opera’s Young American Artists Program, an internationally recognized apprentice program in New York. Earlier this month, De León participated by invitation in a master class with world renowned tenor Marcello Giordani in New York. De León will return to Glimmerglass in summer 2011 after making his Dallas Opera debut in “Romeo and Juliet” in February.
