Nearly 200 Dallas ISD choir students are participating in a three-day workshop at SMU to help prepare them for All-State Choir auditions in September. The All-State Choir Camp is sponsored by Dallas ISD and SMU Meadows School of the Arts.

Students come from Dallas ISD schools and attend the camp at no cost to them.

The camp was conceived by Mackie Spradley, Dallas ISD Fine Arts coordinator, and Gloria Stephens, choral director at Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts. The first year, the camp was conducted at Booker T. Washington. Last year, the camp’s first time to be conducted at SMU, about 85 students participated. This year, enrollment has more than doubled.

Students spend part of the day in sectional rehearsals, led by Dallas ISD music teachers, and the other part in full rehearsals conducted by Dr. Pam Elrod, SMU Director of Choral Activities. On the final day of camp, students will present a final rehearsal/concert on the SMU campus.

Dallas ISD choir students are advancing further in the All-State Choir process since the summer camp began. The goal is for students to be named to the All-State Choir, which is a four-step process involving auditions that culminates at the Texas Music Educators Association conference Feb. 9-11 in San Antonio. Three choirs are chosen: mixed, women and men, with each choir having 200-300 singers.
