Lorena Padilla was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1978. She graduated with a B.A. in audiovisual arts from the University of Guadalajara. In the last 10 years, she has lived in London, Madrid, Lima, New York and now Dallas.

In London, Padilla completed a course in art direction for film at Central Saint Martin’s College for Art and Design, and in Madrid she received a scriptwriting diploma from el Instituto del Cine.

She worked as executive producer of The Naptime, a documentary that was awarded funding from the Tribeca Film Institute Latin America Fund in 2013. The film also received a special mention at the Belgrade Documentary and Short Film Festival and was premiered internationally at the Rencontres cinéma D’Amérique Latin in Toulousse.

Padilla is a Fulbright Scholar and earned an M.F.A. in dramatic writing from Tisch School of the Arts/NYU.

As a writer, she is currently working with Mexican-American film director and 2017 Guggenheim Fellow Rodrigo Reyes on his next film, 499.

As a director, Padilla is working on her debut feature-length film Martinez, a fictional story about second chances and discovering the joy in the small things of life, starring actor Francisco Reyes (A Fantastic Woman, Academy Award for Best Foreign Film ’18). Producer for the film is 2015 Full Frame Award-winner Georgina Gonzalez (Kings of Nowhere, SXSW), president of Off-Hollywood Films in Los Angeles and head of development of Cinepolis Film Production Studios in Mexico City.

Martinez has been supported by the Mexican Institute of Cinematography IMCINE, Berlinale Talents, Torino Film Lab and Cine Qua Non Lab, and won the Tribeca Film Institute/Canacine prize in 2018. Martinez is scheduled to be shot in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2019.
