Meadows Academy for Young Artists

The MAYA Pre-College program gives you a chance to experience SMU Meadows’ Division of Art Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

This summer you can prepare to apply to college by developing your portfolio and critical thinking skills and opening your opportunities to double major in creative computation at the Center of Creative Computation.

The program provides focused college-level curriculum with daylong studio classes, critiques and final projects to rising high school juniors and seniors interested in preparing for college.

MAYA is designed to propel students to experiment, research materials’ functions and viability, challenge ideas and refine work to go beyond your initial process to the best outcome of art making. The program culminates in a final portfolio review.

Session 1

Drawing Foundations
Drawing Foundations is an essential class for applying to art school. In this class you will develop and strengthen your ability to illustrate, think and express yourself on paper.
You will learn drawing techniques to work from landscapes, architectural spaces, still-life arrangements and the human figure. Live drawing will be a component of this course.

3D Animation
Using a number of rendering techniques, this course introduces students to basic technical skills in computer 3D animation. You’ll also study animated films and place them into the critical discourse of art making and how they relate to your work.

Session 2

Digital/Hybrid Media
The digital/hybrid media curriculum includes digital image, sound, video, net art, 3D modeling, video installation, virtual and augmented reality, and digital fabrication. Digital/hybrid media classes utilize the SMU Reality Lab, a space for students to explore, experiment, and create new media art works. The lab maintains innovative technology including a laser cutter, 3D printer, HTC Vive, Merge Headsets and physical computing kits.

Anyone using a camera today must have an understanding of digital tools. This course helps you develop technical and aesthetic skills in photography with an emphasis on digital imaging and its potential applications in fine art.
