Meadows Young Artist Program

Not Accepting Applications for Fall 2024

The Meadows Young Artist Program is a new program targeted to exceptional violin, viola, cello and piano players who are currently juniors or seniors in high school. The program is led by internationally acclaimed concert violinist, recording artist and Meadows School of the Arts faculty member Chad Hoopes, winner of the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

While being immersed in the music program at SMU, these young artists will earn college credit. Participants will take lessons with Meadows School of the Arts music faculty, as well as classes in music theory, musicianship, music history, orchestra and chamber music each semester. They may be enrolled in the Young Artist Program for one or two years and will receive college credit from SMU: seven credits per semester, with a maximum of four semesters. This credit can be applied toward a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts degree at SMU or transferred to another university.

Interested students must simultaneously audition in Meadows and apply for concurrent enrollment. Admission to both Meadows and the concurrent enrollment program are required.

The Young Artist Program is selective and will be limited to a maximum of 10 students.

For more information, please contact Chad Hoopes, choopes@smu.edu.

Concurrent enrollment information:

https://www.smu.edu/simmons/Academics/Concurrent-Enrollment

Note: Concurrent enrollment is not the same as dual credit. Concurrent enrollment classes do not replace regular enrollment in another school; instead, they are separate credits alongside a student’s credits in high school.

Tuition: Young Artist classes are provided at the reduced rate of $760 per credit hour, totaling $5320 per semester. Scholarships are currently not available.

Housing: Students live with their parents or guardian off-campus; no on-campus housing is available.

Attendance: Students must enroll in all Young Artist classes offered each semester, and a student’s high school or dual credit community college schedule must work around the SMU class schedule. No exceptions.
