M.M. in Musicology

The M.M. in Musicology degree offers personalized instruction in the historical, cultural, and philosophical study of music. Coursework includes advanced musicology seminars, research methods, thesis writing, and a teaching practicum. Students work closely with renowned faculty whose expertise spans 19th-20th century Western art music, Medieval repertories, popular music, music in film, and the cognitive sciences of music.

The M.M. in Musicology degree at SMU is unique in its pragmatic focus. Students select from two degree specializations, (1) research or (2) pedagogy. The goal of our research track is to provide rigorous training in the development of a professional-level musicological research project, with the aim of preparing students to be competitive for the top musicology doctoral programs. Students on this specialization track will complete a substantial thesis during their second year. The goal of the pedagogy specialization is to train students in the techniques of transformative college-level music history teaching, including a year-long pedagogy practicum featuring the opportunity to hone their teaching skills in the undergraduate music history classroom.

The M.M. in Musicology degree may be combined with a M.M. in Composition or a M.M. in Performance to broaden career opportunities. Students applying to the program must submit examples of their scholarly research and writing and interview with the music history faculty. Basic proficiency in a second language is required.
