Adjunct Associate Professor of Trumpet

Ryan Anthony joined the faculty of SMU Meadows School of the Arts as adjunct professor of trumpet in 2016. Previous teaching experience includes full-time positions at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and North Carolina School of the Arts.

Anthony first joined the trumpet section of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2004 and began his tenure as principal in 2006. Other orchestras where he has filled in as principal include Los Angeles Philharmonic, St. Louis Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony and sections of the Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic.

Prior to moving to Dallas, Anthony traveled as a member of the renowned brass quintet Canadian Brass. He was also a member of the Center City Brass Quintet and charter member of Burning River Brass. He continues an active schedule as a soloist performing with orchestras and in festivals in over 30 states. Anthony is also busy as part of the duo Anthony & Beard, trumpet and keyboard, performing around the country as well as in numerous clinics and classes as Yamaha artists.

Anthony is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, holding both his B.M. and M.M. studying with Bernard Adelstein, Michael Sachs and weekly studies with David Zauder. He received the Alumni Achievement Award in 2002.

Outside of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Ryan and his wife founded The Ryan Anthony Foundation after his diagnosis of multiple myeloma cancer. The foundation is focused on putting on “CancerBlows” concerts, bringing artists together to raise awareness and funds for cancer research through music.
