The Collection

Catalog

A Note from James Pratt:

I have used my library and travel for structural design inspiration, and I hope my collection will serve the same purpose for you.

I included two examples here:

In a large format book on Egyptian architecture now in the Pratt Collection, see the photographs on the old kingdom Third Dynasty Pharaoh Zoser, who built the first pyramid experiment after mastabas as a stepped pyramid. In preparing for an after life, his pyramid complex includes underground rooms surrounding the pyramid at Saqqara. Those include photographs of beautiful tiled walls, which I saw as inspiration for wall finishes at the entrance to a DISD school that we added space to as we remodeled. This was one of two schools we remodeled in recent years. On the wall above this entrance we commissioned a mural by Pamela Nelson, who served 10 years as Vice Chair of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts in Washington, a monthly review panel for public art and architecture in Washington. She was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001. It also used glazed tile as finish over glazed structural tile employed in walls.

In Japanese photos of the temple in Kyoto called Kiyomizu-dera (in the eastern hills), you will note large columns of Cryptomeria wood, elegantly holding up a great plane extending over a valley. The elegant refined forms in wood I used as inspiration to design a three-part picnic pavilion extended out over the valley of the Paluxy River near Glenrose in Dinosaur Valley State Park. The structure uses steel cable with large wooden columns.
