The Lyle School of Engineering at SMU offers summer camp programs for students in 7th through 12th grades. These summer camps are authentically Lyle, as the facilities, staff, and curriculum are all unique to the Lyle School of Engineering. Camps provide a creative environment for students to learn the fundamentals of engineering through hands-on, interactive team projects.
Each summer we provide two sessions of 11th & 12th grade summer camp (one session for females and one session for males), two co-ed sessions for 9th & 10th grade summer camp, and two co-ed sessions for 7th & 8th grade summer camp.
Summer Camp for 11th & 12th Grade Students:
This camp is designed for rising juniors and seniors in high school to explore the four main disciplines of engineering offered at the Lyle School of Engineering: electrical, mechanical, computer science, and civil and environmental engineering. There are two sessions of this camp, one session for twenty females and one session for twenty males. Camp is 5 days and 4 nights in residence halls on SMU’s main campus. The first two days are spent “skill building." Skill building allows students to learn basic theories and fundamentals of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer programming. After all students have completed the rotation, they are split into 3-4 groups to work on a design challenge, where they design and build a prototype that seeks to solve a real-world problem using their newly acquired knowledge. On the final day, the students present their projects to an audience of parents, friends, and Lyle faculty and staff.
The students spend the majority of their time in the Deason Innovation Gym, the Lyle School’s makers’ space that is a combination of a design studio, a machine shop, and a garage. The 1200 square feet of space houses 3D printers, a laser cuter, vinyl cuter, power tools, and white boards. The Deason Innovation Gym is dedicated to turning ideas into reality and hosts extracurricular projects, in addition to the Immersion Design Experience (IDE) program, which the 11th & 12th grade SMU Lyle Engineering Summer Camp is designed after. The students take an SMU campus tour, as well as a tour of the Lyle School of Engineering labs.
Interested students should complete an application that includes an online form, statement of interest, and letter of recommendation. Details regarding the application process can be found on the Apply to 11th-12th Grade Summer Camp page.
2015 student quotes:
“I really enjoyed getting to learn Python and combining both mechanical and electrical engineering.”
“My favorite part of camp was working with a group to achieve a tangible product.”
“I fell like this camp accomplished what it was created to do within an extremely limited amount of time…. My favorite part of camp was getting an overall college experience.”
The application process for Lyle Engineering Summer Camp at SMU for rising 11th & 12th grade students will open Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 9 a.m. CST. Thank you.
