How Distance Education Program Works

  • Lyle Distance Education Program graduate course lectures are recorded “live” in one of our state-of-the-art tele-studio classrooms, so lectures are never pre-packaged before the term.

  • The live classroom recording includes the lecture being taught on campus, so as a Lyle Distance Education Program student, you will be able to see everything as if you were in the class.

  • High-quality streamed lectures are loaded to our server within 24 hours of the on-campus course. Students normally download the lecture to their computer and watch it within 48 hours to keep current with course content and requirements. Graded homework is returned online, by email, or regular mail.

  • Course materials are available within Canvas and sometimes via email. Students can also contact professors by phone, email, or web-conferencing.

  • Our experienced, knowledgeable staff is available to consult with students and assist with issues related to logistics, registration, course selection, degree planning, and other general questions.

  • Students complete exams at their HR office, training center or another pre-arranged location. Professors provide specific procedures and instructions to a designated and University approved site coordinator, who distributes and proctors the exams, then returns it to the course instructor for grading.

  • Since you are getting lectures and attending in tandem with the on-campus section of your course, classes are offered in standard length terms: spring, summer and fall.

Student Testimonials

Dan Sherrill, Civil Engineer:

"I normally live in Korea (retired from USAF, working as civil engineer), but am now in Guam for awhile. I went through the whole (10 course) systems engineering program and graduated in May 2005. Basics were:

  • I took my exams at the USAF Education Center, Osan AB. No problems with the scheduling, due to my retired military status.
  • The courses are very well-designed, with outstanding professors. They covered a wide range of engineering topics, and made it all interesting. Dr. Stracener and the other professors are some of the best I have seen (in my own 35 years as student or college instructor).
  • I highly recommend this program to anyone with some engineering background, located anywhere in the Asia-Pacific area. It is one of the best opportunities available at graduate level."

Doug Mainz:

“I liked my experience with SMU's distance learning master's program so much, I'm looking to do more.”

James Bolin:

“Thank you for the personal attention. I enrolled last summer in engineering management with SMU distance learning. I couldn’t be more pleased. Thanks again.”
