Dallas, Texas – June 15, 2009 – With a collective emphasis on the nation’s infrastructure, renewable energy, sustainable material, and the environment, the demand for engineers will be increasing 18-25 percent in the next decade.* SMU Lyle School of Engineering’s new Project Management Certificate series, launching Fall 2009, will prepare students and working professionals to lead the way in managing projects critical to U.S. economic stability, defense preparedness, and environmental sustainability.
According to the Project Management Institute, as the number of projects swell, the pool of qualified individuals to manage projects fails to keep pace with available talent. “In the Persian Gulf and China Sea regions alone … a shortage of 6 million skilled project professionals is expected by 2013… [Of] the approximately 20 million people participating in projects worldwide, only one million have professionally recognized formal training on how to best execute the management of projects.”*
“It’s essential that the women and men who plan, design, construct, maintain, and manage our country’s infrastructure—its buildings, bridges, power plants, water and wastewater systems—are equipped with the skills to manage risk, anticipate disaster, and facilitate growth,” says Robert Casagrande, Director, SMU Facilities Services and PM program founder for Lyle. “ No other discipline is more critical to our country’s stability and safety.”
SMU’s Project Management coursework was also designed to emphasize natural resource recovery, air quality and pollution control, and environmental health .
Each certificate will consist of three graduate-level courses offered sequentially, two courses per term and one in the summer. Courses will be delivered in the Lyle School of Engineering’s executive format on weekends or during evening sessions. Three certificates focus on providing depth and breadth in critical areas of concentration.
Enterprise Project Management (EPM) explores the functions of organizations, including functional and project management, finance and contract administration, accounting, cost monitoring, and cost control.
Construction and Asset Management (CAM) draws from economics as well as engineering and centers on the productive processes of organizations, including planning, delivery methods, general conditions, effective construction management techniques, risk and disaster management, and life cycle management.
Infrastructure Systems Management (ISM) involves the systems needed to sustain organizations. These include engineering systems – roads and bridges, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, information technology systems, and environmental regulations.
A fourth certificate covers significant and necessary areas of project management education and delivers a high-level overview of project management.
Adaptable Project Leadership (APL) provides the breadth of knowledge necessary for leaders in organizations. The courses are derived from the essential business functions, productive project processes, sustainable initiatives, and engineering systems of organizations. This certificate is designed for the senior administrator.
The Adaptable Project Leadership certificate leads the executive-friendly series for Fall 2009; course registration will continue until August 24 and classes are scheduled to begin in September. To accommodate the unique requirements of other students seeking graduate education, on-campus and distance-learning courses will also be open for Fall 2009 enrollment.
Upon completion, graduates will be able to demonstrate the relationship between scope, cost, and schedule within a global environment of continually changing economic, social, and regulatory conditions. Candidates for the series include middle and senior level administrators and managers in the private and public sectors, including the U. S. military and U. S. General Services Administration.

T he ENCE certificate programs in project management are designed to benefit professionals at different stages of their career, in fields such as structural, environmental, and civil engineering .”
As with all curriculum within the SMU Lyle School of Engineering, the new project management coursework is largely comprised of “real-world,” hands-on projects and case studies. Students enrolled in the project management classes will follow the main phases of a construction project: initiation, planning, design, execution, and closeout.
“Today’s engineers must develop broad professional and leadership skills to excel in a global marketplace,” says Ret. Major General Richard Mentemeyer, Partner/President of Tri-Tech, LLC, and member of Lyle’s industrial and governmental focus group on project management. “These programs will, of course, focus on leadership challenges, managing project phases, meeting deadlines, and supervising teams to obtain outcomes. The exciting element to this new certificate series is its emphasis on the bigger picture. In other words, how project management impacts a dynamic global environment.”
