Teaching

Teaching and SMU Libraries

Our mission is to support the teaching, learning, and research goals of the university by empowering all students to become lifelong learners with the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information knowledgeably and ethically. To achieve this mission, librarians collaborate with faculty and provide customized, student-centered instruction and research support.

About Information Literacy

Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning. - Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education

Course Materials and Resources

  • If you would like help with finding useful materials for your course, contact your librarian.
  • Faculty members are encouraged to link to online resources provided by the Libraries whenever possible.  In some cases, a URL prefix will need to be added to enable access outside the SMU network.
  • To get a digital copy of a print item in the SMU Libraries, submit a digitization request form.  Requests must qualify for a Fair Use or Teach Act exemption under copyright law.  For more information, see the Copyright Support pages.
  • To request a new book title, please submit a Purchase Request form.  Library staff will try to acquire an e-book version.
  • For streaming media requests, please submit a Purchase Request form.  To reserve a physical media item for your use in the classroom, please submit a reservation form.
  • Course reserve service for physical items is not available, due to the short loan periods and related safety concerns.
