Find Films

Discover Films in our Libraries

SMU Libraries has DVDs, VHS, and streaming film databases.

Use Library Search to find films by title, and select “Video” as the Resource Type on the left side of your results screen. Learn more about finding and browsing films.

Locate Films

Find the library location and item number in the Library Search record under “Get It.” Hamon Arts Library houses most of our physical film collection.

  • In Hamon Arts Library or Bridwell Library, ask for the title at the desk.
  • In Underwood Law Library, use the call number to locate it on the shelf. Call numbers are arranged alphabetically. Each shelf is marked with the range of call numbers it holds.

DVDs can be viewed on any library computer with a disc drive. To play DVDs from other regions, check out the multi-region DVD player at Hamon Arts Library.

Hamon Library’s audiovisual study rooms 2270 & 3270 have multimedia capabilities including a widescreen monitor and a Blu-ray disc player for playing Blu-ray discs, CDs and DVDs. Book an AV study room.

Screen Films in the Classroom

If you want to borrow a film to show in class, request it in Library Search, and we’ll hold it at the library’s desk for you to pick up.

Streaming films are available in our streaming media databases. If we don't have access in our databases, you can request the film. Licenses for streaming films can expire, so verify we have access to the film each semester you assign them. The Library Search record will have an expiration date under the link to the film.

We are unable to license or purchase Netflix or Amazon Prime films for classroom use. Netflix Original allows for educational screenings of documentaries.

Screen Films Outside the Classroom

Any copyrighted films screened outside an official course classroom require public performance rights, even if you do not charge admission. Learn more about acquiring licensing for screening a film.

Find Films in Other Libraries

You can discover films held by other libraries in WorldCat. We are part of a sharing program that allows us to borrow materials from other libraries called Interlibrary Loan. To request a film we don’t have, click on “Request SMU Interlibrary Loan” in the record from the WorldCat search results.
