Purpose
As more born-digital materials are collected by Southern Methodist University Libraries and its special collections units, the need for both digital preservation and an effective digital preservation program becomes greater since there is not an original physical item to re-digitize if the born-digital item is lost or corrupted.
The digital preservation program at Southern Methodist University Libraries seeks to adopt best practices to ensure the integrity, authenticity, and long-term preservation of digital and born-digital materials in its care. The digital preservation program will adhere to the principles laid out in the Southern Methodist University Libraries Preservation Policy and the strategies in the Southern Methodist University Libraries Digital Preservation Framework.
Digital Preservation Advisory Group
To assist in the process of developing and implementing the digital preservation program at Southern Methodist University Libraries, a Digital Preservation Advisory Group was formed with stakeholders from Southern Methodist University Libraries and sub units within. The Digital Preservation Advisory Group evaluates and reviews the policies and procedures for the digital preservation program and helps promote the need for robust digital preservation practices across campus.
