SMU DEDMAN SCHOOL OF LAW ANNOUNCES STUDENT-LED INNOVATIVE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAM

Weeklong program aims to create an open dialogue about wellness and mental health

This week, The SMU Student Bar Association will begin an innovative program that aims to improve the physical and mental well-being of students at SMU’s Dedman School of Law in Dallas. The committee designated the week of Oct. 7 as Wellness Week and chose “Healthy as a Horse” as a theme to coincide with the university’s mustang mascot. The SMU Student Bar Association developed a wellness committee and charged it with improving the physical and mental health of its student body.

Stephen B. Yeager, the dean of students at SMU Dedman Law, serves as advisor to the committee. Yeager said the committee devoted an entire week to the subject because “it is incredibly important and relevant to our student body. According to Yeager, “Law school is known for late nights, high doses of caffeine, and locking yourself away in the library for a month to study for exams. Just like other 20-somethings, law students also deal with a host of common mental health issues like anxiety and depression.”

“The students’ goal for the week is to create an open dialogue about wellness and mental health to help our students become more successful students and ultimately legal professionals. They want to help de-stigmatize mental health and substance use disorders in the legal profession.” 

The student-led initiative has an action-packed week planned.

Reducing the Stigma of Stress and Anxiety

12:30 - 1:20 pm in Walsh

Stress and anxiety are very common among law students. Christian Filsouf (1L), Parker Embry (2L), and Roslyn Dubberstein (3L) as well as Dorlin A. Lafer-Sousa (Katten associate) - share how they personally have dealt with anxiety and reduced stress.

A Recovered Addict’s Guide to Mitigating the Stress of Law School

SMU Dedman Law alum Tyler Jordan '16 shares the story of how the tools he learned to overcome drug addiction became the foundation for managing stress as a law student.

Rock the Smoothie Bikes

Exercise is a great way to release built-up stress.  These stationary bikes with blenders up front bring together fun, fitness, health, nourishment, and sustainability.
