Rural Summer Extern

The Deason Center’s Summer Externship Program offers students a nine-week criminal law externship in small or rural communities in Texas. Externs will hone their legal skills and develop valuable mentorship relationships, while gaining first-hand experience in the challenges and rewards of working in a rural community.

Deason Scholar Program

The Center is accepting applications for the 2022-2023 Deason Scholars Program. This program offers undergraduate and law students opportunities to collect data, research, write, and advocate about emerging issues in criminal justice policy and reform. Scholars work closely with Deason Center faculty and staff on selected projects in the areas of public defense, prosecutorial discretion, and STAR (small, tribal, and rural) criminal justice. 

 

This one-year program offers paid positions to students who have completed the first year of undergraduate coursework. The program begins at the start of the 2022 summer term and concludes at the end of the 2023 spring term. Scholars will work full-time during the summer and part-time (12-15 hours per week) during the academic year.

Undergraduate Research Assistant - Country Justice

This undergraduate research assistant will work closely with the Deason Center’s Rural Research Associate, Dr. Sarah Gammell, to assist with data collection and related empirical research activities as they relate to our Country Justice in Texas initiative. This initiative will investigate the scarcity of attorneys in rural places, the implementation of the Sixth Amendment right to counsel, and the efficacy of rural criminal justice innovations.

 

The research assistant will help create a database of open-source materials that include all publicly available information as it relates to the various aspects of the criminal justice system in the state of Texas.

Research Assistant - GIS Mapping Contractor

The Center is seeking a contractor who is proficient with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to work on our Country Justice in Texas initiative to help map rural Texas criminal justice systems. This project aims to use spatial mapping techniques to increase understanding of rural criminal justice systems. The research assistant will assist with descriptive mapping and basic spatial analysis of the Texas courts, attorneys, and jails overlayed with population data.

This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students.

Student Communications Assistant

The Student Communications Assistant will assist in executing a communications strategy that promotes transformation in the criminal legal system. This may include: Crafting engaging social media content, translating academic research into compelling blog posts, editing highlight videos, and creating multi-platform marketing materials for Deason Center projects.

A student majoring in journalism, advertising, communications, or media arts is preferred. Candidates should be talented writers who also have strong visual design skills. Problem-solving skills, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for criminal justice reform are necessary.

We are seeking candidates who would be available to work in this position full-time during Summer 2022 and remain part-time during Academic Year 2022-2023.

Undergraduate Research Assistants

We are accepting applications for two undergraduate research assistant positions for the Spring 2022 semester.

These research assistants will work closely with the Director of Research, Dr. Andrew Davies, to assist in the empirical research activities of the Center. This may include: Reviewing and synthesizing empirical literature on issues in the criminal legal system, data collection, and data analysis.
