SMU Reads

SMU Community Common Reading

About SMU Reads

Book lovers throughout the Dallas community are invited to participate in an annual SMU tradition, SMU Reads, during summer 2017. This year’s compelling selection is Evicted by Matthew Desmond.

SMU Reads was created to encourage reading and support literacy in the Dallas community. Under the program, members of the community read a book carefully chosen by SMU’s selection committee. Campus and community participants are invited to take part in gatherings and events focused on the book, including a presentation by the author.

Additional literacy efforts under the SMU Reads brand extend beyond the campus to include SMU’s involvement in the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge and other events such as SMU women’s basketball coach Travis Mays’ participation in the NCAA’s Read to the Final Four program for 3rd grade students in the Dallas Independent School District. Reading for a Reason and Coaching for Literacy are SMU student initiatives that focus on literacy in the Dallas community.
