Dear Dedman College Staff and Faculty,
Hi, I’m Alex Moore, a freshman here at SMU. I’m double majoring in English and History, with plans to go on and become a teacher or professor one day. Because of that goal, SMU is one of the best schools I could have hoped to attend. Unfortunately for me, a degree from SMU costs a lot more than my parents and I could scrape together on our own.
When I applied here during my senior year of high school, I did not really have high hopes for attending the school. However, when I found out about the Dedman College Scholars Program, I suddenly had hope for coming here. Without the Scholarship that the program supplies, there is no way I could afford a school as great as SMU. Now that I am here, I’m having a blast. The college life is so different from what I experienced in high school, and I have to say I love the change.
The classes I’ve been taking here are fascinating! Right now I’m in a course on the Vikings, and in a fiction class that focuses on dystopian literature. Needless to say, these are the sorts of opportunities that I love are available to me here at SMU. Outside of classwork, I’ve become involved as a drummer in the Mustang Band, joined Beta Upsilon Chi, and gotten very involved in the United Methodist Ministry here on campus. None of that would have been possible without the scholarship provided by this program.
Thank you all so much for this amazing opportunity to come to such a great school! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and I look forward to three more great years!
Alex Moore, ‘18
