Tenure Track Positions

Dedman College is accepting the following applications for tenured track positions to begin Fall 2024:

Physics. Position No. 00052601. The Department of Physics at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Astrophysics or Cosmology, broadly defined.  Candidates must have: a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field; postdoctoral experience; and a record of research excellence. The successful candidate will develop a vigorous research program, supervise graduate students, and teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty are expected to teach and mentor diverse students within the Physics program and throughout the University. The appointment will start in August 2024 or later. Southern Methodist University is a research-intensive, private university centrally located in Dallas, Texas. Current research in the Department of Physics at SMU focuses on the fields of observational and theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, especially in the areas of the cosmic microwave background, supernovae, early universe cosmology, galaxies, and large-scale structure. SMU faculty are deeply engaged in several international collaborations including DESI, Simons Observatory, CMB-S4, FYST, EXCLAIM and COMAP.  The department also features strong research programs in experimental and theoretical particle physics. Political Science. (Position No. 00006294) The Political Science Department at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Political Theory, starting Fall 2024. The Political Science Department at Southern Methodist University is currently a faculty of fifteen administering programs in political science, international studies, and public policy for approximately 300 diverse undergraduate majors and minors. Faculty research interests include American political institutions and actors, public policy, comparative politics and area studies in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Russia, and international affairs and national security. Faculty are active in the Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute and have access to the resources of the John G. Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs.  Teaching responsibilities include an introductory course in political theory, a history of political thought sequence, and upper-level courses reflecting the candidate's expertise. Candidates with clear and well- developed research and teaching interests in the nexus between equality and liberty, especially in political-economic relationships, are particularly encouraged to apply. Minimum qualifications include the completed Ph.D. in political science (required at the time of the appointment), experience with teaching undergraduate students in political science, and a detailed research agenda. Religious Studies.  Position No. 53620. As one of eight tenure-line positions associated with Southern Methodist University’s faculty cluster in urban research, this position offers opportunities for rich interdisciplinary connections among new and existing SMU faculty [https://www.smu.edu/Dedman/Research/Clusters]. The cluster fosters research on cities and urbanization from local and global perspectives. SMU’s location in Dallas, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country, is an ideal setting for studying the opportunities and inequities that individuals,  groups, and  communities  confront  as  they  navigate  and  shape  urban  life. Assistant Professor in Urban Religions: The Department of Religious Studies in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a tenure track position in Urban Religions at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position requires residency in Dallas and begins August 1, 2024.  Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field at time of appointment; ability to teach courses on religion in urban American or other urban global contexts, and topics related to religion and intersectional identities, social scientific and/or cultural approaches to the study of religion. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to teach courses on Religion and Space/Place, Social Scientific methodologies, Religion and Economics, Religion and Climate Change, and/or African-American or Latino-American religious identities; research and teaching that will contribute to a research cluster in Urban Studies; experience mentoring culturally diverse students; interest in contributing to a robust graduate program in Religious Studies and broader culture of excellent teaching and research on campus.
