SMU offers two faculty-led summer study abroad programs in Italy:
SMU-in-Tuscany: Language and Culture is a five-week Italian language and culture program in Florence, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Students enroll in Intensive Beginning Italian 1601 (Track 1) or Italian language and a World Language Course (Track 2). Students can fulfill their second language requirement in Track 1, or continue their language study and earn other UC credit. Coursework is complemented by an enriching set of activities, such as site visits in Florence, day trips to Siena and Bologna, and an overnight excursion to Rome.
SMU-in-Italy: Arts and Culture is a six-week summer program located in the beautiful medieval hill town of Orvieto in Umbria. The archaeological sites, museums, villas, churches, and towns of Italy serve as living classrooms in which students learn through first-hand experiences of Italian art, language, and culture. From the program base in Orvieto, we make excursions to spectacular cities such as Pompeii, Siena, Florence, Venice, and Rome.
SMU-Approved Semester Programs in Italy:
***The Department of World Languages and Literatures only accepts SMU-approved abroad courses for course credit or for the second language requirement. Only programs listed on the SMU Study Abroad website are eligible for approval for university credit of any kind. We reserve the right to decline any petition for language courses from outside institutions.
