Name: Victoria Gilbert
Graduation Year: 2016
“My name is Victoria Gilbert. I’m from Miami, FL and I majored in Marketing with a minor in Spanish. After graduation, I went into consulting, and I am currently working as a business analyst for an oil and gas company.”
Why did you choose to minor in a World Language?
I chose to minor in Spanish because I wanted to continue practicing it to ensure I didn't lose the skill. I believe that speaking a second language is a highly valuable skill, especially in the business world, so I wanted to make sure I was keeping up with it.
How do you think studying a foreign language helped to prepare you for your career?
Although I do not use Spanish on a day-to-day basis, I believe knowing it is very useful. It comes in handy at work as I am the only one in my office able to speak it. I also believe that it is a good skill to hone for life. Knowing a second language opens one up to a whole new group of people, thereby allowing you to expand your network and continue learning.
What advice do you have for other students thinking about majoring or minoring in a foreign language?
I would tell other students to definitely consider studying a foreign language in college. Regardless of which language you choose, it looks great on your resume and will help you expand your network. I also highly recommend looking into SMU's Study Abroad programs as there is no better way to learn a second language than by immersing yourself in the culture
