“My name is Anna Landreneau. I’m from Houston, TX, and I majored in BBA Marketing with a minor in Chinese. After graduation, I moved to the UK to complete my postgraduate degree, and I am currently studying Business Analytics.”
Why did you choose to minor in a World Language?
I have always enjoyed languages and culture and chose Chinese because it was so unique and fun. I decided to pursue a minor in the language after doing the study abroad trip in China. Being there was such a great experience and I realized it would be an awesome experience working there as well.
How do you think studying a foreign language helped to prepare you for your career?
As mentioned, I’m considering working in China! Knowing the language will have practical application in that regard. Also, even though I may not be at full working proficiency, Western companies who operate in English find it valuable to hire employees who understand the business practices and cultural norms of their business partners, especially as they try to expand in the respective region. What’s great about the Chinese program at SMU is that those cultural lessons are embedded into language learning.
What advice do you have for other students thinking about majoring or minoring in a foreign language?
I highly recommend it, even for students who don’t plan on using the language in their career. Investing in language learning has lifelong benefits. It is well known that learning a language improves your cognitive processes— for example, it can increase your problem-solving abilities, improve memory, and force you to think on your feet.
