Dr. Holden, trained as a developmental psychologist, investigates issues concerning parent-child relationships with the goal of promoting more effective parenting practices. His research focuses on parental social cognition, parental discipline, and most recently, positive discipline. That work led him to become a founder of, and the current president of, the U.S. Alliance to End the Hitting of Children. In 2018, he received the Distinguished Career Award from the International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Dr. Holden has three grown children who survived childhood remarkably well despite serving as pilot participants in some of his developmental studies. When time permits, he enjoys cycling, hiking, trying to grow vegetables in the Texas heat, and most recently, roasting coffee beans.
