Undergraduate Student Awards

Merit Awards

The Department of Mathematics offers merit awards for outstanding mathematics majors.  The John Robert McCaw Endowed Merit Award fund was established to provide merit-based financial awards to one or more junior or senior students who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics and participated in community and/or civic activities at SMU.  The endowment was given in honor of John McCaw, a 1972 mathematics major.

The Charles J. Pipes Merit Award in Mathematics was established to provide merit-based financial awards to one or more junior or senior students who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics.  The endowment was given in memory and honor of Dr. Charles J. Pipes, Jr., professor emeritus and graduate studies director of the SMU Department of Mathematics, who taught from 1950-1980 and was a multi-recipient of the Outstanding Teacher award.

Recipients are chosen each Spring semester, with the recipient announced on Honors Day and awarded a cash prize.  For further information, please contact Professor Weihua Geng (Director of Undergraduate Studies in Mathematics).
