I study European-born merchants who operated businesses along the Lower Rio Grande in the mid-nineteenth century. I am particularly interested in the types of trade they engaged, the trade networks they developed, their marriage and settlement patterns, the institutions they established, and the political influence they wielded in the region. I intend to use a study of this small sliver of society to explore the transatlantic and transnational nature of the Lower Rio Grande Valley in the years that immediately followed the U.S.-Mexico War.
