Austin is a PhD student in history, specializing in the American West and Southwest borderlands in the long nineteenth century. In particular, his research interests include environmental and rural history, the legacy of conflict, and the intertwined roles of memory and identity. He entered SMU's William P. Clements Department of History in the fall of 2018. Austin earned his BA in Honors Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts & History from the University of New Mexico in 2015. After spending a year teaching and coaching in his hometown of Carlsbad, NM, he returned to UNM in 2016, where he completed his MA in the history of the American West in 2018.
