Discernment and Discourse

SMU’s Discernment and Discourse (DISC) program develops skills of critical thinking and analysis by fostering students’ abilities to read and write at the university level and beyond. DISC program instructors teach students techniques to evaluate an array of source materials encountered within and outside the classroom. Students are challenged to insert themselves into critical conversations about these materials and to use them to create new knowledge. The program emphasizes fundamentals of clear written expression and more advanced stylistic techniques expected of university students across the disciplines.

The Department of English houses the Discernment and Discourse program. Faculty from the DISC also staff the Writing Center, a component of the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center.
