The educational mission of the Accounting Department is to produce liberally educated graduates who will enter their chosen profession with a sense of their place in history, conscious of their role in society, aware of the ethical dimensions of their vocations, technically proficient in accounting and related subjects, and capable of a lifetime of learning.
Accounting majors normally begin their careers in public accounting or industrial accounting and earn their CPA certificates. While many graduates remain in the accounting field, others return to school for advanced degrees, or change to fields as diverse as food services, real estate, manufacturing, and banking.
The liberal arts emphasis coupled with the broad business education received in the Cox School of Business provide unequaled career opportunities for our students. At the graduate level the department offers courses that allow MBA students to earn a concentration in Accounting. The school also offers a Master's of Science in Accounting (MSA). The MSA degree is a 32 hour program designed to help students continue to prepare for careers as accounting professionals, as well as to qualify to take the CPA exam in the state of Texas. More information on the MSA program can be found at here.
