Web Design Certificate Program Details

The certificate program is divided into 10 courses for a total of over 160 hours of instruction. In these interactive and engaging classes, you will learn from experts in a classroom or online setting, collaborate with your peers, and build real-world skills.

Introduction to Web Design

This course is offered in a convenient online format.
From developing a business plan to promoting your website, this course teaches you practical techniques for business-oriented websites. Learn how to analyze competitor websites, choose the right hosting package, select an effective domain name, and more practical tools for success.

HTML5 and CSS3 (Level 1)

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) has been the core language used to create sites on the World Wide Web since 1989. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the easy-to-learn formatting language used alongside HTML to control the look and layout of text, images and other elements on web pages. These languages are at the heart of all websites.

Adobe Photoshop Essentials for Web Design

Photoshop is an essential tool for all design professionals, and this course will teach you fundamental Photoshop tools and best practices. You'll learn to use Photoshop tools to manipulate and adjust digital images. Understand layers, sizing, cropping, color balance, using filters and more.

HTML5 and CSS3 (Level 2)

Build on the skills you gained in Level 1 of HTML & CSS in this course. Continue developing your coding abilities while learning to enhance your web pages with pro tips and tricks.

Adobe Illustrator Essentials for Web Design

Illustrator is the industry-leading tool used to create professional vector graphics for print and web designs. Illustrator provides precise and powerful drawing tools and a host of time-savers for busy professionals. Learn how Illustrator fits into a modern web design to create useful vector graphics in your page design.

Web Graphics

Learn how to create professional GIF, JPG, and PNG images (for foreground and background images), while optimizing to make pages load faster. You'll also learn about images in responsive design, and you’ll design buttons and navigation bars for use in web pages and mock-ups.

JavaScript and jQuery

Improve user interfaces and enhance usability with JavaScript. You'll learn the basics of JavaScript programming with techniques aimed at visually-oriented designers, along with designer-friendly jQuery to make writing JavaScript easier. Begin with the basics of setup and syntax, then build up to more complex, dynamic features.

Fundamentals of User-Interface and User-Experience

Learn to design web pages with special consideration of how best to plan for user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). You'll approach designing a site by diving into the first three of five stages of web development: defining the site, developing site structure, and design visual interface. Develop a content strategy, creative brief, sitemap modeling, and wireframe board before bringing the page design together. Then learn to use UI and UX as part of your marketing strategy.

Responsive Design

Responsive web design responds to the user’s device based on screen size, platform and orientation. As the user switches from their laptop to tablet to mobile, the responsive website automatically switches to accommodate for resolution, image size and scripting abilities. In this class, learn how to think beyond the desktop, and craft designs that work across platforms.

Web Design Capstone

This course is offered in a convenient online format.
In this tutorial-style course, you'll experience the process used by professional freelancers and design firms to create websites. Learn to assess site requirements, create project plans, design templates and sitemaps, and publish a complete website within the context of a simulated real-world web design project. Guided by your instructor, you’ll follow a structured design process throughout the course. Upon completion of the project, you will have created your own website that can serve as the beginning of a professional portfolio. Successful completion of the course is the capstone requirement for SMU's Web Design Certificate program.
