About the Web Design Certificate Program

How much experience with technology is required?

The purpose of the certificate is to allow students to familiarize themselves with all practical aspects of web design, and obtain practical knowledge in the process. Mac or PC users, graphic designers, and programmers can participate.

Can I enroll in the web design certificate program if I don't know HTML very well or at all?
Yes. The purpose of the HTML courses is to provide students with good working knowledge of HTML. Students learn to hard code HTML during our program.

I've been doing web sites for several years. What will I gain from this program?
This depends on what kind of training you've already had in web design. Learning to code the latest versions of technologies like CSS and design beautiful, effective websites will set you apart from the rest of the web design industry. Take a look at the course details, and if you see skill sets or topics you are not familiar with. Keep in mind that our courses cover both introductory and intermediate topics.

I still have  questions. Does SMU have advisors for the Web Design Certificate that I can speak to further?  Yes, please contact us, and one of our Program Advisors will be happy to help.

Class Scheduling

I have a full-time job. Can I fit the web design certificate into my schedule? This certificate program was designed for working professionals. Courses are offered in the evening to fit your busy schedule.

Coursework & Materials

Will I receive grades in each class? Are there any exams? Online exams are administered for each core course. Students who are enrolled in the certificate program must achieve at least a 75% at the end of each course in order to pass.

What is the minimum software that I need to have in order to complete the web design certificate? During the certificate program, you will be working on a real-world website project and will require use of the Adobe Creative Cloud software. Please note: The Creative Cloud software needs to be downloaded and installed before your first class. The download is large and may take a considerable amount of time.

Financial Aid/Assistance

Can I start a class while I am waiting for my loan to be approved? No. But once we receive notification that your loan has been approved, you can start registering for classes. You must complete your Sallie Mae loan application at least 14 days before the first day of class.

Do I need to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)? No, the FAFSA is used only for degree programs and is not accepted for continuing education programs.
