Books of the New Testament utilizing the Cherokee syllabary developed by Sequoyah (ca. 1770 – 1840) were first printed in New Echota, Georgia in 1829 and again in 1833. After the Cherokee Nation’s forced removal to Indian Territory by the United States government following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, additional portions were printed in Park Hill and Cherokee Baptist Mission in present-day Oklahoma between 1838 and 1859. The first edition of the New Testament was published by the American Bible Society in New York in 1860.   

This 1850 first edition of The Gospel According to Luke in Cherokee was translated by Samuel Austin Worcester (1798–1859) and Stephen Foreman (1807–1881). The Bridwell Library copy is bound with translations into Cherokee of The Gospel According to Matthew (1850) and The Gospel of Jesus Christ According to John (1854), also printed in Park Hill at the Mission Press. The first press established in Oklahoma, the Mission Press also published primers, catechisms, and other pedagogical works.
