"Since I was a kid I have made scraps of designs, always beginning with the same center–a love knot or Solomon's Knot–interlaced chain links. The father of my second grade teacher in Winder, Georgia taught me how to draw a love knot. The fact that this was the one thing that I could draw probably accounts fully enough for the center of my designs."

"The designs were just tension relievers for a restless spirit and a rather awkward left hand, and I did not know that they had a proper name. A friend told me one day that he had seen a book on the sort of designs I made and that they were called 'mandalas'."

"The mandalas continue to be mainly a means of easing lengthy meetings and giving my hands something to do while listening. I am grateful to Mr. Vogel for having another showing of my mandalas during an interim of his outstanding exhibits of sure enough art."
