Admission Requirements

A holistic approach to the admission process

In addition to GPA, our admission committee weighs many factors during the course of the application process, including classroom performance, rigor of high school curriculum, quality of essays and recommendations, extracurricular activities, talents, character and life experiences. But what's most important for you to know is that your application will be considered individually, on its own merit. While standardized test scores (SAT/ACT) are not required for foreign passport holders attending secondary school outside the United States, these scores will be considered if they are submitted as part of the application for admission.

English Proficiency Requirements

If English is not your native language or your entire secondary education has not been administered solely in English, you should take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). SMU recommends a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 90 with specific minimum sub-score requirements or an IELTS test of 6.5 or higher. SMU's TOEFL and IELTS School Code is 6660.

If there is a concern regarding English proficiency yet the applicant is academically admissible, a conditional offer of admission to SMU’s Intensive English Program will be made to the student. To ensure academic success, once a student arrives to SMU, before a student can register for classes, an English placement exam will be administered to ensure all students are placed in the correct courses.

Auditions and Portfolios
If you plan to major or minor in music, dance, or theater, your audition is a requirement for admission. Studio Art and Film and Media students must also submit a portfolio. First-year students in all other majors are admitted as "pre-majors" into Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, regardless of intended major.
