Scholarships and financial aid

Smart Start. Smart Value.

Paying for college at SMU

SMU is an investment that will last you a lifetime. At SMU you’ll have unique opportunities to prepare for life beyond college.

Innovative approaches to learning, engaged learning beyond the classroom, academic flexibility and the University’s intimate setting in the heart of one of the nation’s leading metropolitan areas add up to a solid educational investment in your future.

We’re proud to note that Kiplinger named SMU among its best values in private colleges. At SMU, four out of five first-year students receive scholarships and/or need-based aid.

The average amount of an undergraduate’s scholarship and need-based financial package is $24,200. More than $55 million in scholarships and grants were awarded by SMU last year. Our goal is to reward your academic achievement and consider your family’s financial circumstances as we work with you to support your educational goals.

After you’ve been awarded any merit-based scholarships, your SMU financial aid adviser will review your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE.® Then your adviser will put together a package of federal, state and SMU-funded awards, including grants, loans and work-study options, to meet your specific situation. But you won't know what your financial options are until you apply for admission.
