Joshua Folmar joined the Academic Development for Student-Athletes team in the summer of 2017 as the department’s Writing Specialist.
Joshua came to the Hilltop after earning his MFA in Writing from the University of New Hampshire where he taught courses in English composition, creative nonfiction, and poetry.
A non-traditional student, Joshua’s passion for education stems from his undergraduate experience of earning his BA from the University of Alabama while simultaneously serving honorably in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. During his time at the Capstone, his own struggles as well as those of his friends and roommates—both student-athletes and student-veterans—led him to co-found the University of Alabama’s Campus Veterans Association.
When he is not working with student-athletes, Joshua serves as the project director of a nonprofit writing program for veterans as well as the associate poetry editor of a national literary magazine. He lives in Dallas with his wife Rebecca Folmar, the Director of Risk Management here at SMU.
