The 2018 U.S. News & World Report ranks SMU #59 out of 310 best national universities, the second highest ranking in Texas.

Forbes ranked SMU 240 out of 300 schools in its Best Value Colleges review published in 2019. The rankings are based on five general categories weighted in the order of quality, drop-out risk, graduation time, alumni salaries and skills, and each school’s gross tuition and fees. In other recent ratings, Forbes has ranked SMU 104 out of 650 (in 2018) in “Top Colleges”, 56 in “Research Universities” and 17 in the South.

Conde Nast Traveler ranked SMU among "The 50 Most Beautiful College Campuses in America" in 2018. 

College Rank Top 25

College Rank named Perkins Chapel at SMU 16 out of 35 of the nation’s most beautiful college churches and chapels. The rankings were based on factors including student programming, campus architecture and aesthetic, tradition and history in addition to community outreach. 

Latino Leaders Top 50

SMU is included among the 50 “Best Schools for Latinos” in Latino Leaders magazine’s 2018 print edition. The Top 50 schools were based on institutional information provided by universities, along with independent sources like the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), joined data by U.S. News and World Report and other reporting agencies.

The Center for World University Rankings

The Center for World University Rankings 2019 placed SMU at 315 for universities worldwide, 133 nationally and 27 for alumni employment.

Forbes Global 2000

SMU ranked No. 142 overall and No. 27 in the alumni employment category, which is assessed by the number of alumni who have held CEO positions since 2011 at the world’s top 2,000 public companies listed on the Forbes Global 2000 list.

The Princeton Review ranks The Guildhall at SMU #2 for 2019 for the best graduate game-design program and was #1 for 2018 and 2017.

The Economist

The Economist ranks SMU Cox #14 in the world for faculty quality in 2018. The publication also ranks Cox #16 in the world for potential to network, and among the top 30 schools in the world for breadth of alumni network, alumni effectiveness and faculty quality.

America's Most Entrepreneurial Universities

Forbes ranks SMU #14 among "America's Most Entrepreneurial Universities." SMU is the only Texas university in the Top 20. Read more.

Academics

Cox School of Business

  • Poets & Quants for Undergrads ranks SMU Cox 19th among the nation¹s top 88 BBA programs for the second consecutive year, based on admissions standards, academic experience and employment placement. The survey was published in December 2018.
  • In fall 2016, the last year this publication ranked BBA programs, Bloomberg Businessweek ranked SMU Cox 21st overall in the nation, and No. 5 in the nation for post-graduation BBA salaries. (Bloomberg Businessweek no longer ranks BBA programs.)
  • The Cox School of Business Full-Time MBA ranks 43rd according to U.S. News & World Report's 2020 Best Business Schools (published in March 2019), up from 48th in the previous year¹s rankings.
  • Bloomberg Businessweek ranks Cox's full-time MBA program 41st in the United States and 48th in the world in its annual survey published in November 2018.
  • The Economist ranks SMU Cox's Full-time MBA program 14th in the world for faculty quality. The publication also ranks Cox No. 16 in the world for potential to network, and 20th in the world for alumni effectiveness.
  • In spring 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranks the SMU Cox Executive MBA 23rd in the nation, the only Executive MBA program in Texas that ranks in the top 25.
  • In its fall 2017 biennial Executive MBA programs, the Financial Times ranks SMU Cox No. 16 among U.S. Executive MBA programs. SMU Cox ranks at No. 29 globally in career progress, higher than any other Texas-based business school and 7th among business schools based in the United States. The next biennial survey will be published in fall 2019.
  • The Economist ranks the SMU Cox Executive MBA 25th in the U.S. and 40th in the world in its 2018 survey.
  • The Economist ranks the SMU Cox Master of Science in Management program 6th in the U.S. and 25th in the world in its 2017 survey. The next biennial survey will be published in fall 2019.
  • Forbes ranks SMU Cox #38 in the nation in its biennial ROI rankings of best business schools for MBA return on investment in 2018.

Ten Colleges with the Highest-paid Psychology Graduates
College Factual cited SMU’s small class sizes and research focus, among other factors. Psychology graduates at SMU have the potential to earn the highest mid-career average salary of $109,000. SMU also is ranked as the third best university in Texas.

The National Law Journal/Law.com “Go-To Law Schools”
Dedman School of Law ranked #27 for most alumni promoted to partner during 2018; #32 for highest percentage of 2018 graduates in associate jobs at the nation’s 100 largest law firms; and #36 in hiring of 2018 graduates into full-time, long-term law jobs that require bar passage and were not school funded.

Lyle School of Engineering

  • Women make up 34% of Lyle’s undergraduate population, with 10+ consecutive years of Lyle enrolling more than 30% women engineering students.
  • The Chronicle of Higher Education ranks Lyle #9 among private, nonprofit institutions in conferring engineering bachelor’s degrees to women.
  • The Master's Programs Guide ranks Lyle #19 among Top 50 Exceptional Online Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering Degree Programs; and #41 among Top 50 Exceptional Online Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Degree Programs.
  • Lyle has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education for 15 years – from 2006 through 2021.
  • A $5 million gift was committed by Richard and Mary Templeton to enhance the quality of research at Lyle through the Templeton Endowed Research Excellence Fund.

Best College Dance Program
SMU’s Division of Dance has been designated among the “Best College Dance Programs for 2019-2020” by DanceUS.org. The online portal, which provides articles, editorials and event information for dance professionals, students and enthusiasts, selected 23 schools across 13 states as the country’s top programs.


Meadows’ Dance also has been named in the top 10 B.F.A. Dance programs in the country by OnStage Blog 3 years in a row –  2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.
OnStage Blog focuses on theatre, musical theatre, film and media arts, and performing arts.

Highest Paid Music Graduates
College Factual ranks SMU #1 in its list of “Highest Paid Music Graduates in 2019.”
