Organizations of the Women's Center
The Women's Center provides student leadership development opportunities for the members of the student groups advised out of the Center. Student groups which are advised by the Program Coordinator of Women's Programming and meet at the Center include:
-
Women's Interest Network (WIN)
provides a voice for women's interests and concerns on campus by sponsoring programs designed to stimulate conversation and action. In the 2001-2002 academic year, WIN coordinated a benefit performance of
The Vagina Monologues that raised over $4000 for a local domestic violence shelter.
WIN
consists of several sub-committees such as Take Back the Night and
Men with Integrity.
-
Spectrum (formerly GLBTSO) seeks to create a forum in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender students and their supporters can come together in a non-threatening environment to speak openly about their concerns. Through programming which addresses stereotypical images and misconceptions,
Spectrum provides educational opportunities for its members and the SMU community.
-
YWCA @ SMU works towards the goal of empowering women and eliminating racism everywhere. With its rich history in the Abolitionist movement and its close connection to the national
YWCA, this organization provides outstanding mentoring and programming on diverse women's issues.
-
Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) through its middle-school mentoring program, provides positive role models and hands-on learning opportunities in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering.
WISE offers its members leadership opportunities and strives to facilitate greater communication and integration between SMU science and engineering departments.
