Admissions

The University Honors Program at Southern Methodist University invites the top incoming students to apply to join a community of scholars in learning and living. Shortly following acceptance into SMU, qualified students will receive a short application for the University Honors Program.

When inviting students, the UHP examines the following characteristics:

  • High-School GPA and Class Rank
  • Difficulty of high-school curriculum and how many Honors and/or Advanced Placement courses were taken
  • SAT and/or ACT scores, with an emphasis on SAT Verbal and ACT English scores

Invitees of the 2003-2004 school year had an average SAT Verbal score of 674 and an average ACT English score of 31.

SMU students who are high-achievers and not part of the University Honors Program are encouraged to contact the Honors Office during their first semester.  Top-performing non-Honors students have enrolled in the Honors program after their first semester in the past.

If you are interested in the University Honors Program and would like a contact for the student perspective on SMU and the UHP, please contact the Honors Office.
