Activities for Section 3: METER

    1. Look at several of the pieces/etudes that you are currently working on. What is the Meter? Are they SIMPLE or COMPOUND meters?
    2. For each of the above works, mark the BEAT in each measure with that beat's number (1, 2, 3, etc.) above the point in the measure where that beat occurs. Then add a plus sign (+) above each SUBDIVISION of the beat. How does the music notation match these beats and subdivisions?
    3. Try writing a short yet interesting rhythmic passage (4-8 measures long each) in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8 meters. You can do this on music staff paper or just on a single line on regular paper. Count the number of subdivisions in each measure to be sure that there are the correct number present. Now play through them on a drum, your instrument (on a single pitch) or by clapping.
