Activities for Section 1: INTRODUCTION

  1. Browse the link to the Classical Music Archives. Listen to several MIDI files of the music of various composers. Listen SPECIFICALLY to the music... for patterns that may repeat. How high or low is it? How fast or slow it is? What style or mood does it convey? Can you predict at times what note or chord is next? Can you remember and sing the melody?

  2. After listening to a few works, click the "Search" button above and do a search for that composer's name and the word "biography". Try to find more information on that composer: When did he or she live? Where? What other works did they write? Start a notebook file of your favorite composers and works. Listen to more music by them and keep listening to other unfamiliar composer's music, because you never know which of them may become your "new" favorite composer!

  3. Explore the other two links. Become familiar with some of the background and terms used in music.

  4. If you do not already play an instrument, or sing in some group or gathering, try to find one. Making music is not only the best way to learn about it, but also a great way to enrich your life! Most of the activities after each section will ask you to read, play and write some music. Your local school, music store, or library will help you to get started with this.
