DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
for students entering the program in 2008 and after

Requirements for the M.A. degree

  • 30 semester hours of course work, including 12 semester hours in the four common courses in Religious Studies:
    • Philosophical Study of Religion
    • Approaches to Asian Religions
    • History, Theory, and Method in Religious Studies
    • Contemporary Approaches to the Study of Religion
  • Proficiency examination in a foreign language
  • Thesis
  • Oral examination covering thesis and entire course of study

Requirements for the Ph.D. degree

  • 48 semester hours of course work, including 12 semester hours in the four common courses in Religious Studies
    • Philosophical Study of Religion
    • Approaches to Asian Religions
    • History, Theory, and Method in Religious Studies
    • Contemporary Approaches to the Study of Religion
  • Proficiency examination in two foreign languages
    Biblical Studies students must take exams in Hebrew and Greek as well.
  • Four comprehensive field examinations
  • One-semester practice teaching
  • Dissertation
  • Oral examination covering dissertation and entire course of study
