Resources for
the Practice of Evangelism
The essence of
evangelism is actually sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with
others. As simple as this activity is, the implications of it
reverberate throughout the Christian life. Not only must
Christians be prepared to present the Gospel, they must also be
ready to nurture and edify those who receive the message. For
this reason, the Center of Evangelism offers these resources as
a means of better equipping individuals and local churches for
these manifold processes.
Prayer and
Evangelism
At the
heart of any evangelistic effort are the love of God and the
love of neighbor. For this reason, prayer is a necessary
activity for anyone who would engage in evangelism. It is
through prayer that we are transformed by the Holy Spirit so
that we see others as God does, and offer
them the Gospel in love.
Moreover,
it is through prayer that we seek for God to awaken the
hearts of those to whom we offer the Gospel. The work of the
evangelist is to love and share with another. This work,
however, does not mean that the evangelist “brings” Jesus to
the other person. Rather, the Holy Spirit has already been
working in the life of the other person. Our message is
meant to “awaken” (to use a Wesleyan term) the other person
to the Holy Spirit’s presence through the presentation of
the Gospel. Only in prayer can the evangelist be prepared to
engage another on such a deep level.
