Distinguished as a journalist, Washington bureau chief, presidential
speechwriter and best-selling author, Chris Matthews currently hosts
MSNBC's critically acclaimed Hardball with Chris Matthews and The
Chris Matthews Show. Known for his depth of political knowledge and humorous
insight, he is also a regular substitute anchor on NBC's Weekend
Today.
Matthews has covered some of the most important events of this generation,
including the opening of the Berlin Wall and the first all-races election
in South Africa. He has twice been awarded the Washington Post's Crystal
Ball award for his successful predictions of U.S. presidential elections.
Matthews built his résumé working for 15 years in politics and government. He was a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter and served for six years as top aide to Speaker of the House Thomas "Tip" O'Neill, Jr. He has authored three best-selling books, including his first effort, Hardball, which is required reading in many college-level political science courses. His most recent book, America: Beyond Our Grandest Notions has recently been published.
Matthews is a graduate of Holy Cross College and is married to Kathleen Matthews, award-winning news anchor for the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C.
