Dave Barry was born in a small town in New York in 1947. Known for his irreverent sense of humor, he was elected "Class Clown" while a senior at Pleasantville High School.
Barry earned a degree in English from Haverford College, and after graduating landed a job with a Pennsylvania newspaper named The Daily Local News. He covered boring municipal meetings and dreamed of a better life. His dreams eventually took him to a consulting firm that taught effective writing to business people. Somehow he lasted there eight years.
In 1983, Barry left the consulting firm for good and took a job with I, and he has been there ever since. Five years later, he won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. Today a syndicated column containing his zany observations about life's absurdities appears in several hundred newspapers.
The father of two, Barry is the best-selling author of a number of books, including Babies and Other Hazards of Sex, Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need and Dave Barry Talks Back. The CBS sitcom Dave's World was based on a couple of his books.
